Play Chess It is not very difficult to learn to play chess. As we all know, chess is considered a game of the mind, full of strategy and tactics. To play chess, the basic requirement is having two players. Each of the chess players controls an army of sixteen chess pieces, consisting of eight Pawns, two Bishops, two Knights, two Rooks, one Queen and one King. The object of the game is to attack and trap the opponent's King so that it cannot escape the danger. Placing the opposing King in danger of being eliminated is called 'checking'. When the King is completely surrounded by enemy troops, with no way out to escape, he is said to be 'checkmated', and this is usually the end of the game.
To play chess well, one must be conversant with the various moves employed in a game. These moves are used depending on the strategies of the opponent. Besides these moves, at a very basic level, it is important to know the three stages of a game - the opening, the middlegame and the endgame.
In the opening, the players bring out their forces in preparation for combat. The opening is usually a sequence of moves, and is important as it helps determine the strategy that the players will utilize in the middle and endgame stages. In the middle stage of the game, chess players maneuver for position and initiate attacks and counter attacks. In the final stage of the game, or the endgame, when few Pawns and pieces are left on the chess board, the King comes out and joins the final battle.
To play chess, a player has to be mentally alert, and aim to remove as many opposing pieces as possible. When one piece comes in the way of another opposing piece, it is removed from the chess board. Each player has to defend his own pieces and aim at attacking or checkmating the opponent's King. As soon as the King is checkmated the game gets over. However, the game need not always end in checkmate. There are different scenarios that may result in the game ending in a draw. Besides, a game can also end if one of the players resigns, as defeat is imminent.
In order to be a good player, one has to be in touch with the game constantly and look up earlier games involving the masters and learning the different moves and countermoves from them.
Wooden Chessboards are very nice for playing chess.
